What the Papers Say

Rogers exits. Hearst turns and faces the mirror. He begins to smarten himself - unrolling shirt sleeves, inserting cufflinks etc.

Hearst

There’s a certain art in selling papers
A subtle skill in feeding that voracious appetite
The profits soar in retail
When the devil’s in the detail that we write
The truth is often dull and overrated
That’s why we spice it up
And give the public what they want
If there’s a story there to tell
We’ll make it ours and watch it sell
We’ll never let the truth get in the way
Of this money spinning vaudeville cabaret

Noses on the glass
Looking through the lock
Do you really think a hack is gonna knock, my dear?
Stories to be told
Truths to be arranged
Anything to stimulate the stock, my dear

Looking through the trash is a public service
Digging up the dirt is my gift to you
Mirroring the morals of a sordid nation
Turning something pure into the next sensation
Is my libation

Let’s take this country on a moral crusade
A worthy fight against corruption
We’ve raised a nation on the stories we’ve made
Don’t let the law get in the way
The law is what the papers say

Rogers enters carrying Hearst’s jacket. He helps him into it and then clips a cigar for him.

Hearst & Rogers Punch ‘em when they’re up
Kick ‘em when they’re down
Either way you’ve got ‘em
And you’ve got your story
Morals in decline
Time to draw a line
Spread a little scandal for the sake of glory

Hearst You can’t crush a man with a movie picture
Hit him where it hurts with a quote or two
Either way you look
There is one true victor
Never mind the details
Selling gossip serves the public

Let’s take this country on a moral crusade
A worthy fight against corruption
I’ve raised a nation on the stories I’ve made
Don’t let the law get in the way
The law is what my papers say

There’s a knack to preaching from a pulpit
A little flair for picking out just what the people want
Be grateful for your daily spread
You’ll never guess who’s in whose bed
And scandal’s just the price we have to pay
‘Cos morality’s the game the papers play

Selling gossip serves the public

Fine, upstanding, honest, decent papers say!
